The Insect

Phylloxera is a sap-sucking insect. The name comes from the Greek words phyllon (leaf), and Xero (dry). Hemipteron is an insect, native to North America and its scientific name is Daktulosphaira vitifoliae. Sometimes still it is used the originally name described in France as Phylloxera vastatrix. May have winged or wingless forms. It is a yellow insect, which is less than 1 mm long. It is an insect with a sting-horn equipped that sucks the sap from the roots of the grapevines up to dry them and kills the plant. It reproduces very quickly and can finish very fast with whole vine plantations.

In 1863 they find the first symptoms of the phylloxera presence in Europe. Where it had arrived as a result of the called "oïdium criisis", a disease which caused that propel several European countries to import U.S. stocks/vinegrapes in order to experiment as new varieties. The following year it was discovered and classified in France by the scientist Jules Émile Planchon who gave it the name of Phylloxera vastatrix. Between 1873 and the end of the century, the plague spread throughout Europe, causing devastation in most wine-growing regions.
